Displacement and evaporation processes during the storage and handling of hydrocarbons lead to the release of organic vapours. These emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can cause significant health risks on the one hand, and they are additionally known to be precursor substances for ozone gas which, for example, causes summer smog. In order to protect man and his environment, suitable measures must hence be taken in order to minimise the resultant emissions.

The oil and chemical industries, for example, offer significant potential for the necessary emission reduction where large amounts of organic vapours are released and in most cases mixed with air during the storage and distribution of their products. This holds particularly true for gasoline and related products where losses of more than 1.5 litres per cubic metre handled can occur during handling. This is exactly where BORSIG Membrane Technology comes into its own. It offers maximum recovery rates of up to 99.9% and thereby enables compliance with all customary emission standards whilst also fulfilling the highest quality, safety and reliability demands.

BORSIG Membrane Technology offers optimum solutions here which help minimise looses. Recover valuable raw materials or products from exhaust air or process gas flows and their recycling into the production process. Recovery of organic components and vapours (volatile organic compounds = VOCs) are central applications for the chemical and petrochemical industry.

BORSIG Membrane Technology is particular interesting for operators of polymer production plants. Un-reacted monomer or other components of a high value can be selectively separated from the carrier gas, concentrated and fed back into the production process. This enables very short payoff periods. One typical application, for example, is the separation of olefin monomer from purge gas during the polymer products degassing phase. Advantages for plant owners include high monomer recovery rates, high nitrogen recovery rates from the purge gas for re-use in the process, as well as simple retrofitting / capacity expansion of existing condensation plants.

Meet Your Target Gas Specification

BORSIG’s Membrane Technology offers the possibility to treat gas flows in oil and gas production application. The aim is to condition raw gas Flows or to improve product quality with a view to compliance with pipeline specification or calorific- value requirements.

The required gas quality is typically specified by defining pressure dew point, calorific values or a minimum methane number. All these quality parameters are determined by the share of higher hydrocarbons in the gas

The BORSIG polymer Membrane enables the reduction and separation of higher hydrocarbons (C3+, NGL) from associated gases. The higher hydrocarbons are selectively separated by the membrane and concentrated at the low-pressure end. The product obtained in this way can either be added to the crude oil or, following compression and pressure condensation, made available in liquid form as a valuable input material for petrochemical applications. This membrane technology can be used for a range of purposes, from adjusting the calorific value of fuel gases for gas motors or gas turbines to adjusting the dew point in gas pipeline systems

Tailored Membranes & Processes



Thanks to the persistent further development of advanced membrane materials and the possibility of tailored molecular surface engineering, BORSIG Membrane Technology offers selected products for advanced membrane applications.

During selective pervaporation, part of the liquid feed flow is continuously evaporated through the membrane into the permeate which is kept under vacuum. The new application of the pore filling concept enables the tailor-made design of membranes for specific separation functions.
